2009 Awards Program Update

News | November 6, 2009: The 2009 Recognition Ceremony was held Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Rayburn House Office Building with Secretary Ray H. LaHood serving as the Keynote Speaker. Our Master of Ceremonies, Joe Toole, Associate Administrator for Safety, FHWA, introduced Greg Cohen, Executive Director of Roadway Safety Foundation, who issued moving remarks prior to Secretary LaHood's speech. The Secretary's speech was filled with praise, thanks and finally, encouragement for the winners to return to their communities and continue their life saving efforts. Throughout his remarks, the Secretary continued to reiterate that the Administration's number one priority is safety!

Our award-winning guests were also joined by Executives and high-level representatives from a number of core transportation safety organizations: Tony Kane and Jim McDonnell (AASHTO); Phil Caruso (ITE); Tony Giancola (NACE); Barbara Harsha (GHSA); Peter Kissinger (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety); and Cathy Gillen (RSF). A number of other special invited guests attended to celebrate this safety achievement.

History and Purpose

The National Roadway Safety Awards program honors agencies and organizations in the transportation community that have made verifiable and significant strides toward improving the safety of our nation's highways through infrastructure improvements, operational improvements or program planning, development and evaluation. Every two years, this prestigious biennial awards program examines the "best of the best" using effectiveness, innovation, and efficient use of resources as criteria in determining which projects will receive this coveted award. Co-sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and Roadway Safety Foundation, this program has garnered winning entrants well-deserved top industry honors since 2001.

Why Apply for a National Roadway Safety Award?

In addition to the personal and organizational rewards associated with saving lives and improving safety on our nation’s roadways, the tangible benefits of this program are numerous and far-reaching. Winning project designees will receive:
-- An invitation to attend a national-level recognition event in Washington DC and the opportunity to accept the award personally from key USDOT officials
-- Meeting opportunities with legislators and key transportation officials in Washington, DC
-- National media coverage and additional local media support, identifying your organization as a leading safety improvement resource
